Taking a blank canvas and creating a stylish, yet comfortable space is what makes a talented interior designer tick. There are so many rules to interior design that can be limiting. One designer has been in the business for over 20 years due to his artistic vision, eye for detail, and love of fine art. He also does not follow the rules, but follows his instincts and heart. His name is Richard Mishaan and he just released his second book called “Artfully Modern”.

 

Richard Mishaan Design is based in New York City and has worked with many rich and influential people. He focuses more on what looks good together rather than the price tag, when others glance past items that are cheaper. He even has had the same sofas for over 20 years in his apartment. His thoughts are if you buy quality things, then they will last a very long time.

 

He also likes to think outside the box by mixing eras and styles together to get a harmonious design that appeals to the art lover. Richard Mishaan also displays his lover of color in his design. This is particularly apparent in his Hampton’s house. There is blue and white. In another room there are plaids, stripes, and flame stitches. He has an artistic touch that any lover of design would love.

 

Richard Mishaan was born in Cartagena, Columbia. He was partially raised in Italy. He attributes his sense of interior design to the Colombian culture, which is bold and colorful. He later received a Bachelor of Arts from New York University. He also attended Colombia University School of Architecture.

 

He married artist Marcia Rolfe Mishaan and they have two kids. They have one boy and a girl and are both of college age. Richard Mishaan and his wife Marcia currently reside on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Their home overlooks the iconic Central Park. He owns a home goods/design store in Greenwich Village called Homer.

Susan McGalla, the founder of P3 Executive Consulting, LLC states her opinion on women in the business sector is, “Not to focus on the glass ceiling, but work ethics.” She further advises women to build a network of support and influencers.

 

Within the past two-decade women have made progress in the workplace with higher degrees and many have replaced their male counterparts in the workforce.

McGalla is regarded as an expert on branding and marketing. She desires to see talented women in higher positions in the workplace.

McGalla’s expertise on current issues facing women in the workplace has led to a speaking engagement before the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University Conference for CEO’s.

 

She offers important tips to women seeking higher positions in the workplace. McCalla advises, “Young women not to be intimidated by the growing cost of a higher education.” She noted, “While there is continued growth in jobs, for many women, it is difficult to advance in the workplace.”

McGalla further states that currently, “Women make up almost half professional workers.” This number should change rapidly,current statistics for college enrollment for females exceeds those of the male population. In the future, woman will have more access to executive positions within companies to meet continued demands for a skilled workforce.

McGalla advises, “Not to reinforce stereotypes, and let your work speak for itself.”

MGalla view, continued confidence, higher education and opportunities for skilled women with work ethics will lead to higher paid positions.

EDUCATION TECH: CLASSDOJO

Education tech has rendered the parents-teacher meeting obsolete. This technology has created a community of educators, parents and students where they build specific positive behavior on students in school. ClassDojo is one of the education tech companies that provide these benefits.

Sam Chaudhary and Liam Don founded ClassDojo, which is based in San Francisco CA, in 2011. This was formed to enable millions of teachers, students, and parents to collaborate to see the success of their kids’ lives.

The ClassDojo app provides features that both teacher and parents use either at school are at home. Teachers use this app to plan daily activities and share photos and videos with the kid’s parents showing their participation in recent activities.

The year round and even during school day communication of the ClassDojo community enables parents to know what their children experience in school, the activities they engage themselves and how they behave themselves while in school.

According to the company’s report, this app is used in 2/3 United States schools and over 180 other countries. In the US, 85,000 schools use this app actively inclusive of chartered, private and public schools.

ClassDojo is the easiest way for teachers to encourage students, and share their best moments with parents. When the company was founded in 2011, other edtech companies digitized their curriculum, grade books, and testing platforms but ClassDojo was free and easy to use application compared to them.

Just like other businesses, they do face competition from other education tech companies like Kickboard, FreshGrade, Nearpod, Remind and many others that provide online community for parents, teachers and students.

From the time this company was created in 2011 up to date, the San Francisco-based start-up has raised $31 million in venture funding. It even further moved from the education tech accelerator, Imagine K12 and now it is a part of Y Combinator.

In series B round of venture funding, ClassDojo has raised $21 million. General Catalyst led the series B round of the company. Other investors that are behind the company include GSV, Reach Capital, and SignaFire. The company closed the round in 2015 and are using the capital to grow their team.

General Catalyst Managing Director Hemant Taneja says that the company does not have any plans for monetization. The company motivation is what the parents and teachers need this is what drives the company.

The Life and Career of Jose Borghi, a Leading Advertising Executive in Brazil

Jose Borghi influence in the Brazilian advertising scene cannot be underestimated. The founder and president of Mullen Lowe Brazil, the highest regarded advertising house in Brazil, is a man of great knowledge in the industry. The campaigns that ever passed through his hands registered tremendous success and received overwhelming reception from the Brazilian market. Jose’s advertising expertise is anchored on both experience and academic qualifications. Academically, he holds a degree in Campaign and Propaganda from PUC-Campinas. Experience-wise, he has been in the industry for 28 years.

Borghi’s Career

Jose’s career path was unclear and took the intervention of his sister to get it defined. Confused about which career to choose, his sister took him to a commercial presentation at the Castro Nerves Center in an attempt to assist him in identifying his potential. This presentation completely changed Jose’s line of thinking and immediately fell in love with advertising and learn more about Borghi.

The Agency Standard Ogilvy was Jose’s first landing after completing his degree. The firm employed him as an editor, a job that opened doors for him within the advertising industry. From the company, he joined FCB and latter DM9/DDB. Before opening his ad agency, he was working with Leo Burnett.

Mullen Lowe Brazil

Jose Borghi got a good business partner in Erh Ray and teamed up with him to establish BorghiErh in 2002. The company was operating from Ray’s compound, had limited funding, and had only the two owners as staff. Motivated by the urge to succeed, the two businesspersons put in a lot of effort in seeing the company grow. Their effort was rewarded with loyal clients who stand with Jose until today.

BorghiErh entered into a partnership with Lowe in December 2006. Afterward, Ray Erh quit the partnership and left Borghi to manage the firm by himself. With the departure of Ray and the collaboration with the Mullen Group and Lowe & Partners, BorghiErh rebranded to Mullen Lowe Brazil.

A litigator can either specialize in a specific area of law or do general work. They can work for themselves. They can also work for specific firms and/or government agencies. The life of a litigator can be very trying and stressful at times. This is why it is very important that those looking to specialize in this area are 100% sure. You need to be committed to the process and the work.

We asked Karl Heideck for some of his input on the subject matter.

“It is a tough road to take. You really have to be sure you want to do this for a living. I was sure from day one. Not everyone is like that. It does take a lot out of you. It is going to test you. It is rewarding work, especially when you get to be a champion for the underdog”.

We asked Karl Heideck about the education process to become a litigator.

“You must have a BA degree in law. There is no way around it. You have to take the LSAT. This is a test you take to get into law school. It is approved by the ABA (American Bar Association) and everyone has to take it. You should earn a J.D. degree. This is the Juris Doctor. The last step is to pass the bar. As long as you pass the bar you are good. Do not worry about passing it on your first time around. I did not. It took me a few times. It becomes a character-building experience in a way”.

The last thing we asked Karl Heideck about was the job experience. Is it necessary while you are in school?

“Yes. The more experience you have during school, the more likely someone will hire you on after college and law school. Try to get experience while you are studying for your B.A. Those who cannot do this should try for something during grad school. The sooner the better. You have to be both book-smart and street-smart to be successful as a litigator. Everyone does entry-level work to start out. Start out slow and you will get there”.
