Louis Chenevert Shares his path to Success

Louis R. Chenevert, formerly of United Technologies Corporation, was also the President of Pratt & Whitney Canada. He attended HEC Montreal, University of Montreal, and Concordia University, earning his education in business.

As the CEO of United Technology, Chenevert was in charge of the production of aircraft engines and other aerospace parts. The company is located out of Farmington, Connecticut and was founded in 1934.

In a recent interview, Chenevert shared a careers worth of knowledge. The first question asked by the interview was about Chenevert’s ideas and how they came to fruition.

“When I was at UTC, the focus on operational talent and engineering was extremely important to delivering ideas that would produce results,” Chenevert said. Louis Chenevert said that exceeding customer’s expectations was one of the most important things to him and his company.

Mr. Chenevert owes his success to his first job. Even though it was a very difficult job, as GM of an assembly plant, Chenevert honed his people skills and learned how to manage a team. In order to run a company, employees must listen to you; if employees don’t listen to you then you can never be a successful entrepreneur.

Louis Chenevert says that if he were to start his career over from the beginning he would pay closer attention to corporate politics. During his career he learned that internal politics can be damaging to results, impacting future profits and hurting business. “Never tolerate people who don’t align with the agenda,” said Chenevert. “Energy drainers slow down the progress in large companies.”

Chenevert describes his business strategy as a mixture of having the right personnel, relentless focus, and an open mind. He was successful because he got the right team together. Chenevert made certain that his team mates could overcome obstacles and appreciate working on a team. “Surround yourself with winners,” Chenevert said. “You are only as good as the sum of your team.”
